In 1989, the American Board of Medical Specialties granted approval for and subsequent recognition of primary board certification for emergency medicine, further demonstrating the central role of high-quality emergency care in the rapidly changing health care arena in this country. Under the leadership of Dr. James Wilson, an academic department of Emergency Medicine was established at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in 1986 - representing only the thirteenth such medical school-based department in the United States. Since that time, more than 70 academic departments are now recognized, forming a solid core for continued growth in the scientific practice of emergency medicine.

Consistent with continued growth evident at the national level, the Department of Emergency Medicine at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine has committed itself to furthering research, medical education, and community service through a vast patient base throughout much of Northeast Ohio. With 14 clinical sites and more than 100 active faculty members, the consortium hospitals in the Department of Emergency Medicine provide ample opportunities for bedside and didactic education of medical students, residents, and fellows, for clinical research, and for new program development. In addition, the Department hosts two Emergency Medicine residency training programs and an accredited Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship program. NEOUCOM students and residents from throughout the consortium rely on the Department’s clinical faculty and teaching sites to provide unique educational opportunities for students from all backgrounds and varied interests. The Department of Emergency Medicine at NEOUCOM sponsors an active EM Club that meets regularly on the school’s main campus. Student leaders from the EM Club regularly attend the Emergency Medicine Council meetings and enhance communication between the Department’s clinical faculty and those students with an interest in emergency medicine as a possible career choice.
