Working with the Office of Continuing Professional Development 1. What is continuing medical education? Continuing medical education (CME) consists of educational activities that serve to maintain, develop or increase the knowledge, skills and professional performance and relationships that a physician uses to provide services to patients, the public or the profession. The content of CME is that body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine and the provision of health care to the public.
2. Why is CME Important? Quality CME can enhance a physician's knowledge base and practice skills. CME credit is mandatory in many states, including Ohio, for medical relicensure. Hospitals, health care organizations and third-party payers also increasingly use CME participation as part of the credentialing and reappointment process.
3. What are the Essentials in CME (as defined by the ACCME)? The Essentials are the criteria, or standards, by which NEOUCOM (the accredited sponsor) and its CME program are evaluated in order to determine qualification for accreditation. Please refer to the ACCME web page for more information.
4. What are the CME Requirements in the State of Ohio? Ohio physicians are relicensed on a staggered renewal bases. Applications for license renewal are mailed to and must be returned to the Ohio State Medical Board. Physicians are asked to certify on their application that they have completed the appropriate number of Continuing Medical Education credit hours. Please refer to the State Medical Board of Ohio for exact requirements.
