IntroductionAs a Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Pharmacy (NEOUCOP) Preceptor, you are embarking with us on a new and exciting phase of experiential pharmacy education. The program is committed to experiential education in each of the four years of the professional curriculum. You are providing an invaluable service to NEOUCOP by assisting us to prepare students for the pharmacy profession. As a working pharmacist training future professionals, you are making an enormous contribution to the students, the college and northeast Ohio. The materials below will help prepare you for this important responsibility. First Year (P1) Pharmacist Patient Care ExperienceThe first PPCE site visits take place during the winter and spring of the first year in the professional curriculum. The primary goal of the first year Pharmacist Patient Care Experience (PPCE) site visits is for the student to gain exposure to a variety of practice settings and to begin the process of professional orientation to attitudes, values and behaviors expected in pharmacy practice. You will be assisting students in acquiring very basic skills in pharmacy practice and professionalism. Teaching students basic pharmacy practice skills, assigning them meaningful tasks and modeling the best in professionalism and ethical behavior will be your challenge, especially when you must combine these efforts with your normal job responsibilities. Please do not hesitate to contact the college if you have any questions; we are happy to assist you. Second Year (P2) Pharmacist Patient Care ExperienceThe second year PPCE site visits begin in the fall and extend throughout the entire year of the professional curriculum. The goal of these experiential site visits is for the student to be exposed and gain experience in the process of filling and dispensing prescriptions in both community and institutional practice settings. In addition, the student will acquaint themselves to the challenges and opportunities of providing pharmacy services to the underserved patient. Third Year (P3) Pharmacist Patient Care ExperienceThe third year PPCE site visits begin in the fall and extend throughout the entire year of the professional curriculum. The goal of these visits is for the student to be exposed to the processes and systems utilized to achieve appropriate medication outcomes in the patient. Students will monitor medication safety, identify quality improvements of the medication use system, identify appropriate monitoring parameters for drug therapy, recognize the legal and regulatory requirements of the site, and counsel patients on medications. Fourth Year (P4) Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE)Beginning in the summer of the fourth year students complete 10 months of advanced pharmacy practice experiences. The theme of these rotations is "Patient Centered Care".
